Code of Ethics for Organizations Using Ayahuasca
Note: This Code of Ethics is a common minimum Code for all individuals or legal entities that are part of the Platform.
The undersigned entities and organizations commit through his letter, without prejudice to altering their identity and proprietary principles, to adopt the following common ethical procedures regarding the use of AYAHUASCA in organized sessions:
Reception and Monitoring
- A preliminary interview must always be carried out with the participants in order to inform them about the essential requirements to participate in a session and to detect if there is any cause to prevent their participation
- The possible effects, the format and duration of the session and the composition of the substance to be taken must be reported in such a way that the participants can understand and assimilate
- Follow-up of the participants is recommended
- It is recommended that the participants sign an informed consent about the session to be held
- We must maintain an optimal level of human quality at all times, before, during and after the sessions
Vetos
Participation should be prohibited to people:
- Mentally incapacitated by some type of severe disorder.
- Taking any medication incompatible with the use of this traditional medicine
- Participants who come without information or reject it
- Anyone who does not meet the conditions set by the organizing entity of the session
Money
- The sale, traffic, commercialization or investment of any kind with the use of ayahuasca is not allowed
- The objective of the financial contributions must be to defray the expenses incurred by the offering of the sessions as well as to help the indigenous peoples, traditions and religious lineages or scientific investigations in the maintenance of their structure
Law
The organizations and entities that organize sessions with Ayahuasca are committed to behaving and expressing themselves in accordance with the current laws contained in our Constitution or working towards modifying based on this Code for its harmonization with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, especially with regard to matters related to freedom of conscience and religious freedom, always ensuring that their actions do not harm others.
Health
Ayahuasca should not be offered as a «remedy» for everything.
Environment
The preparation of the drink must not harm the natural habitat of its origin or pose any threat to the native personnel of the environment. The protection of nature and its inhabitants (Mother Earth) must always be a bond of union between the ayahuasqueros of the world.
Communication and Information
- Each entity must take responsibility for the information it provides to its members or the media, emphasizing that it does not speak on behalf of other organizations and carefully choosing its communicators
- The commitment not to practice proselytism or make public boasts about the sessions or the consumption of ayahuasca is accepted. All interested parties or newcomers have the right to receive the information they request in a healthy and positive way
- The Platform supports scientific research on ayahuasca and is committed to collaborating in specific research cases
Authorization, Guidance and Development of Sessions
- Any person who guides a session with Ayahuasca must have the corresponding supervisory authorization from those responsible for their line of work. In the event that they do not belong to any recognized Line of Work, the participants must be informed of this
- The person who guides a session with Ayahuasca should not lead sessions beyond whatever you are capable of and sure of being able to carry, be it in time, intensity or any other factor
- The person who guides a session with Ayahuasca will be obliged to hold the sessions with rectitude and ethics, focusing exclusively on their own development, that of the people who attend the session, their group or organization, their environment and for the good of humanity. They must absolutely refrain from voluntarily causing any kind of harm to anyone:
- a) Respecting the sexual, physical and emotional integrity of the participants
- b) Not trying to extract money or influence during the session
- c) Treating all the personal information of the attendees confidentially
Coverage
- This ethical code is open to new contributions
- The members undertake support of other sister organizations and defense of all aspects related to the use of Ayahuasca, in an honest effort to unite the people and organizations involved
- The members strive to maintain a high level of prestige, rigor and social usefulness in their practices
- Anyone who accepts this code of ethics accepts to inform the Platform for the defense of Ayahuasca of any detected irregularity or abuse that endangers the good name of Ayahuasca, so that the Platform can Act accordingly
